OUR STORY
A wise physician has empathy and compassion.
In western medicine, expertise means having an exhaustive knowledge on a topic, usually from a single point of view. In Tom’s life, he has been fortunate to become an expert dealing with heart disease from three perspectives: the cardiologist, the functional medicine doctor; and the atrial fibrillation (AF) patient. Combining these perspectives has helped him see that the path to becoming a wiser physician first requires humility.
Tom and his wife, Beth, were on a camping trip when he first experienced symptoms of AF: racing heart, lethargy, and a shortness of breath that came on as they were breaking camp. Following his diagnosis, they took a road trip to consider possible treatments. On that drive they listened to the book The Disease Delusion, by Jeffrey Bland, PhD, and they conceived a radical plan for their future: revolutionize the way heart disease is healed.
Because, on that road trip, one thought stopped Tom cold: he had been putting a Band-Aid on a major chronic disease. Conventional medicine wasn’t treating the root cause, but even worse, was giving patients a false sense of security. This meant sufferers would continue down the same destructive path, and though AF might not be their undoing, something else surely would.
The Gift of Wisdom
Together, they took a hard look at their diet, years of stress, and the way they had prioritized work over family and their own health.
Beth began researching and cooking nutrient dense foods. They lost weight. They realigned priorities and renewed their curiosity in the marvelous world around them. They connected with nature and began practicing mindfulness and meditation.
Beth became driven by the joy of effecting change and providing the counsel and support to sustain health. Seeing Tom take control over his AF and becoming less dependent on pharmaceuticals to control her thyroid condition have informed Beth’s coaching practice.
They now see their role as facilitating healing. Opening their minds to the joys of curiosity and collaboration has dramatically improved their ability to discover healing solutions. They see their patients not as problems to solve but as people with intrinsic wisdom who want to work in partnership with the Colorado Functional Cardiology team to achieve wellness.
They wake each morning excited to great the day, happy in the knowledge they can truly help patients find healing, wellness, and longevity.
Proven Success
Why simply treating heart disease isn’t good enough
- Heart conditions often worsen or accompany other health conditions.
- Half of atrial fibrillation patients receiving an ablation experience a return of symptoms within 3 years.
- After a first heart attack, statin medications are only 30% effective in reducing the risk of a second heart attack.
%
of American adults have heart disease
%
of Americans have chronic disease
%
of Americans are on prescription medications
This is not good enough.
At Colorado Functional Cardiology, our medical experts will get to the root of your heart problems and develop a program for healing that supports you in making meaningful changes.
